International Flag of Planet Earth
Care to Change the World
Introduction
The International Flag of Planet Earth is a symbol of shared existence on a single, interconnected planet, created to represent Earth as a unified entity beyond national boundaries. Designed by Swedish artist Oskar Pernefeldt, the flag encapsulates the idea that Earth itself is a home to all people, irrespective of nationality, culture, or creed. Pernefeldt conceived it in 2015 as part of a larger vision to create a single emblem under which humanity could rally—whether in peaceful times, in response to planetary crises, or in exploration beyond Earth. The flag’s design—a blue field with seven interlocking white circles—was chosen to evoke a sense of unity and interconnectedness, as well as Earth’s oceans and atmosphere, which sustain life for us all.

The seven rings, interconnected and forming a central flower shape, convey multiple layers of symbolism. They represent the natural interdependence between humans and the environment and highlight that Earth is a shared space requiring mutual respect and responsibility. The flag’s blue background reflects the appearance of Earth from space, symbolizing a reminder of its beauty, fragility, and uniqueness. This view of Earth from afar, often referred to as the “Overview Effect,” has inspired astronauts and space thinkers to perceive the planet as a single, precious entity, encouraging a sense of stewardship rather than ownership.
Pernefeldt’s design resonates deeply with the idea of a collective responsibility. The flag doesn’t merely symbolize Earth; it calls for action and awareness of the challenges that transcend national borders—such as climate change, inequality, and sustainable development. This unifying emblem encourages collaboration between nations, institutions, and communities to address global issues as a cohesive force. In this sense, the flag represents an aspirational vision: a world where humanity comes together for common goals that prioritize collective well-being over individual gain.
Flag of Planet Earth for Global Social Equity Alliance
For us, the International Flag of Planet Earth would symbolize a profound commitment to our vision, in a way we can’t express ourselves. As GSEA pursues its mission to champion equity, sustainability, and empowerment across diverse regions, the flag stands as a fitting reminder of the interconnected, inclusive future GSEA aims to foster. Whether advocating for environmental resilience, social equality, or inclusive economies, the flag embodies GSEA’s goals—reminding us that these efforts contribute to the well-being of the entire planet, not just individual communities. By being permitted to use this symbol, GSEA aligns itself with a broader, globally recognized vision of harmony and unity, signaling its commitment to meaningful, inclusive change that honors our shared Earth and collective future.
In short, the International Flag of Planet Earth becomes, for GSEA, more than an emblem—it becomes a declaration of intent to serve humanity and the planet, resonating with both the mission and the values GSEA holds central.
